The National Broadband Network (NBN) is a government initiative to ensure all Australians can choose high-speed broadband by 2021. The NBN is a wholesale-only network, which means NBN Co. does not sell directly to consumers. That's where Telstra and other suppliers come in.
The NBN has started to make an appearance in a number of towns and suburbs. Many residential and commercial developments are in the process of getting the NBN now. Some areas such as Wollongong, Kiama, Dapto, Minnamurra etc. already have NBN available.
Things that you may want to know about the NBN.
Originally the NBN was to be an Optic Fibre cable to your premises product, now it may be either Optic Fibre or Optic Fibre to a Node and copper wire to your premises. When NBN arrives at your place of business you will be required to provide a power point for termination equipment to function. This is a considerable change from traditional telephony where telephone lines were powered via the exchange.
NBN Network Termination Device (NTD) is a small wall mounted box. It is not transportable so placing of this NTD is crucial when first installed in your premises.
The NBN NTD has 4 ports that can be used for your LAN or direct to ADSL/Wi-Fi modem, 2 x digital line ports (SIP lines), 1 x coaxial port, a power and Optic Fibre in put port.
The NBN broadband is not an ADSL service and existing ADSL modems are not compatible, new device will be required to run broadband or voice on the NBN regardless of your preferred supplier.
The NTD unit provides 2 ports that can be used for SIP lines similar to standard Telephone (PSTN). These lines may not work with faxes or Eftpos machines, you will need to get advice on this from your preferred supplier, they will also offer a solution. If you require a line for a back to base alarm then a different arrangement will be required, please check with us for best results.
Battery backup is also available with NBN NTD, while this will keep the NTD functioning for some time during a power outage, it will not run indefinitely.
How fast is the NBN Broadband?
The NBN basic speeds available is 25Mb down and 5MB upload and can be increased up to a maximum of 100Mb download and 40Mb upload, as a comparison, ADSL2+ maximum speed is 24Mb down and 1Mb up, providing you are very close to the exchange.
